About Baghpat

Baghpat city is located on Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh on the banks of River Yamuna. It is the district Headquarters of Baghpat district. The name of the city is derived from a Hindi word “Baagh” which means Tiger. Initially the city was within the boundary of Meerut district, by 1997 when new Baghpat district was formed Baghpat city was made its capital. The city is sited 507 km away from the state capital Lucknow and 47 km away from the national capital Delhi. People of all religions and communities reside in Baghpat. 

History of Baghpat

Baghpat is a historic and ancient city in India for which references can be spotted from the era of Mahabharata itself. Pandava brothers were said to be the founders of the city and it was tiled as “Vyagprastha” during their times. Vyagprastha means “Land of Tigers” as these regions sheltered a larger population of tigers in India during Mahabharata period. It is also said the city was actually named as “Vakyaprasth” which means “Place for delivering speeches”. During Mughal era the city was at last named as Baghpat. 

Baghpat is one of the five villages inquired by Pandavas to avoid the great war of Mahabharata. Close to the city was once sited “Lakshagarha” which means “Wax Palace” which was designed by a Minister of Duryodhana named Purochana to assassinate Pandava brothers. The “Pakke Ghat” in Baghpat is another historic location where renowned Shankaracharya Swami Savroopanandji attained his “Jnana”.

The city is surrounded by Khekra Tehsil in the South, Rai Tehsil in the west, Pilana Tehsil in the East and Baraut Tehsil in the North. Baghpat city is located on the border of its district Baghpat which makes the city much closer to its neighbouring district Sonipat towards its west and it is also near to Haryana state.The city has numerous water bodies in its ground and on its borders. Summers are hot and long while the winters are cool in Baghpat.

The popular areas and localities in the district Headquarters are Bhajan Vihar, New Colony, Old Town, Katipura, Baghpat Bangar, Desraj Mohalla, Nayagaon and Bahgpat rural Hamedabad Mill. The Bhajan Vihar locality forms the top end of the city and it is through this locality the state highway UP SH 57 enters Baghpat. It has few ponds in its grounds. The popular landmarks of Bhajan Vihar locality is PWD guest house, Officer’s field hostel, Arya Samaj Mandhir and Sonepat Bus stand.

Areas and Localities of BaghpatThe New Colony locality below Bhajan Vihar locality is popular for Vatsayan Palace & Digamber Jain temple and it is through this locality UP SH 57 and UP SH 14 runs and merges. The Baghpat Bangar locality is one of the important localities in Baghpat city as it homes very important government agencies like the Baghpat Tehsil, District Magistrate court and Baghpat Mukhya Post Office. Bageshwar temple and the Baghpat vegetable market are very popular landmarks of Baghpat Bangar and the locality is very close to the banks of River Yamuna towards its West. 

The Nayagaon locality forms the east end of the city and the UP SH 14 enters the city through this locality. Baghpat sugar mill is a famous landmark of Nayagaon locality. The Desraj Mohalla locality forms the southern end of the city. UP SH 57 forms the border of this locality and the popular landmarks of the locality is the Mishre Devta temple.

The density of population in the city is 17468.8 people in an inch per sq km in an area of 2.88 sq km. The population growth in the city is increased by + 3.229 % per year from the last census year of 2001. The city packs 7880 families within its boundary. 

The total number of children in Baghpat between 0 to 6 years of age is recorded as 8781 out of which boys constitute 4592 and girls constitute 4189. The children population constitute 17.45 % of the total Baghpat population. The sex ratio in Baghpat is recorded as 903 female out of 1000 male and the child sex ratio in the city is recorded as 912 girls out of 1000 boys.

The average literacy rate in Baghpat is recorded as 61.43 % i.e. 25510 which is less than the average Uttar Pradesh state average literacy rate of 67.68 %. The male literacy rate in the city is recorded as 68.91 % i.e. 15053 and female literacy rate is recorded as 53.12 % i.e. 10457. The total number of illiterates in Baghpat is recorded as 24800.

The total number of people employed in the city is recorded as 13505 out of which male constitutes 11922 and female constitutes 1583. Out of the total working population nearly 78.79 % i.e. 10641 are engaged in main work and the rest of 21.21 % i.e. 2864 are engaged in marginal work.  

Out of the total city population nearly 2337 people i.e. 4.65 % belongs to Schedule Caste. Nearly 67 % of the total city population are Hindus, 32 % are Muslims, 0.2 % is Christians and the rest of 2.8 % constitutes Sikhs and Buddhist.

Administration in Baghpat

Baghpat city is the administrative Headquarters of Baghpat district. Baghpat city constitutes a Municipal board which comprises of 25 wards for which elections are conducted once in 5 years to elect 25 ward members to the municipal board of Baghpat to form the urban local government in the city. Out of the 25 ward member one ward member is chosen to be the Chairman of Baghpat Municipal board and the current Chairman of the board is Shri. Rajudin Malik.

Baghpat city operates under Meerut administrative division. The city is one of the three Tehsils or sub-districts in Baghpat district apart from Baraut and Khehra. Each of these tehsils is further sub divided into administrative blocks and the district has a total of 6 administrative blocks out of which Baghpat and Pilana blocks comes under Baghpat Tehsil. Baghpat is also a Tehsil Headquarters.

The district Headquarters Baghpat homes the District Magistrate court which is the highest level court in Baghpat district and ranked next to the High court of Uttar Pradesh. Both civil and criminal cases are taken up by the court and it is headed by a district Judge who is directly appointed by the High court.

Economy in Baghpat

Economy in BaghpatBaghpat on the banks of River Yamuna is primarily an agriculture oriented land also more than 70% of the city population has agriculture as their main occupation and agriculture is one of the main contributor to the economy of the city. The chief crops cultivated in the city are sugar cane, rice, wheat and vegetables like potato, lady’s finger, spinach, pumpkin, radish, carrot and many others.

The Baghpat corporative sugar mill is another main economy contribution factor in the city which also provides employment to many on Baghpat. Apart from the sugar mill the city has no notable industrial establishment in its grounds .

The Panchvati temple is a very famous Hindu pilgrim in Baghpat which is sited in the heart of the city on the banks of a water stream. The main speciality of the Panchvati temple is that it is divided into three segments or it is a combination of three Mandhirs. The first segment of the Mandhir is dedicated to Goddess Santoshi Maa, the second segment is dedicated to Lord Rama and the third segment is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. 

Digamber Jian Temple is a very famous pilgrim landmark in Baghpat. The temple has a big historic importance and it is toured by Jains all around the world every year. At the time of Mahavir Jayanti a mass 3 day celebration cum carnival is hosted in the Digamber Jian Mandhir premise which is attended by a huge crowd.

Pura Mahadev temple in Baghpat is one of the ancient temples in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is very popular for its religious practice because Lord Shiva’s devotees carry water from the Holy River Ganga in Haridwar and walk along way till Baghpat Pura Mahadev temple and offer it to Lord Shiva the residing deity in Pura Mahadev temple twice in a year. The temple is also very popular for its 14 days Shraavana fairs.

The Gufa Waale Baba ka Mandhir is Baghpat which is also dedicated to Lord Shiva is another popular temple in the city where festivals like Diwali and Holi are organised in a grand scale and also the religious activities on every Sunday in the Mandhir is very famous. The Naag Baba ka Mandhir is very well-known for its Naag Panchmi celebrations. The Bageshwar Temple and Mishre Devta Temple are other well-known temples in Baghpat city.
